The Bottle Project began in 1986. My goal was to reach out to strangers, offering them a message of prosperity and fulfillment of their dreams. I created handwritten notes, burned the edges to appear old, rolled them up, tied them with red string, placed them inside a discarded wine bottle and sealed them with wax.
I placed approximately 110 bottles across 15 Southeast Asian countries, near to the sea or moving water whenever possible. My hope was that, when found, a stranger would feel that someone they didn’t know, from a foreign country, recognized their existence and wished the best for them.
I have maintained a document describing the launch of each bottle and remarks on the conditions along the way through eighteen countries -Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, French Guiana, Bali, Java, Sumatera, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Tibet, China, Macau, Hong Kong, and Japan.
The first bottle was dropped in Tahiti, March 4, 1986. The last bottle, the 110th, was let off the back of a canoe-like boat traveling down river through Bangkok, Thailand, in December, 1986.
