During the initial pandemic lockdown in New York City in April, 2020, I was struck by the power of the invisible virus to change our lives and wondered how people would respond if they could actually see the virus living on surfaces in our environment. I began making Coronavirus-like sculptures out of Clementines and red fabric, and ultimately created over 400 of them. I placed 300 of the little sculptures in high foot-traffic areas of the lower east and west sides of New York City. 100 were disbursed in the City of Newburgh, NY, on benches, windowsills, mailboxes, and other places in full view. It was my hope that passersby would pick up the Coronavirus look-alikes and find my note, #seethevirus, inviting them to post their discovery on social media. This ultimately failed because as one person explained to me, “Are you kidding! I’m not picking that up!”.
